Andre Abajian, owner of SoCal Removal, has developed a niche in Orange County, California. It started with a contract Andre landed with the Yorba Linda Water District. The project involved the demolition of a unique city block of historic homes. Interestingly, the Yorba Linda Town Center demolition was originated by the Yorba Linda Water District due to the sewer line lateral caps. Through completion of this project, SoCal Removal became one of the most experienced experts in the demolition and salvage of historic homes within Southern California.

SoCal Removal’s Niche: Demolishing OC Water Tanks

Realizing Orange County [deleted word] was ready for a major facelift, Andre quickly saw opportunity in the demolition, sewer line caps, clean-up and site grading of aging megastructures, especially water tanks. After successfully completing the Yorba Linda project, Andre bid on the demolition of the Irvine Ranch Water District’s (IRWD) water tank in Lake Forest. “The plans and schematics they gave me are from 1970, so they’re 46 years old. I’m sure the tanks themselves are 40 plus,” Andre commented. The tanks have outlived their usefulness and are only a liability.

Today, SoCal Removal has earned the respect and business of two county water agencies –The IRWD and the Yorba Linda Water District. As Andre puts it, his relationship with the two “is growing.”

No Risks, No Rewards: The High Stakes of Water Tank Demolition

As a business owner, Andre’s first concern is safety. Every piece of personal protective equipment will be used when demolishing a water tank. “Vests, all the goodies will be brought out. It’s going to be a lot of fun!” Andre said with a grin.

A good, responsible businessman knows to minimize risk. Andre is convinced he earned brownie points after the IRWD reviewed SoCal Removal’s excellent insurance policy. To the IRWD it demonstrated a responsible business. To Andre, it just makes good moral and business sense. The 300-plus page Project Manual presented included specific insurance guidelines. SoCal Removal, needless to say, met every requirement.

The time schedule is explicitly spelt out and tight. Completing the IRWD project on time is necessary for a profitable venture, since failure to meet the deadline means a $500-a-day penalty. Andre’s plan is simply stated, “Get the equipment up there at the proper time and start shearing!”

Water tank project time frame

SoCal Removal plans to start immediately after the first of the year. The unbelievable goal is to have the IRWD water tank project completed by the end of January, possibly the first week of February. As it stands now, the tank should be demolished and the site cleaned up by the end of January. Pretty amazing.

Andre plans to further expand his expertise in the demolition of aging structures. Projects such as the demolition of the city block in Yorba Linda as well as the IRWD water tank provided invaluable experiences. The massive undertakings which demand heavy equipment are Andre’s favorites.
